— FANTASTIC LIONY MANES —

Hand embroidery on wood workshop

Hosted by Adriana Torres (aka Miga de Pan)

“A lion king, cats with wings, a caped-and-capped fox who conjures, and a sweater-draped chair that seems to come alive… The often anthropomorphic embroideries of Adriana Torres are as full of life as they are rich in texture. Using a muted pastel palette accented with the occasional touch of silver or gold, Adriana employs a seemingly endless number of meticulously placed stitches to create whimsical embroideries that tell a story in a single frame. The artist calls on various techniques to build depth and a unique tactile quality into each of her embroideries, often casting shadows that become as much a part of each work’s narratives as the characters and scenes they depict. Each capturing but a brief moment in time, Adriana’s curious creations leave you aching to discover what happens next.”

Adriana Torres is a textile artist and illustrator from Argentina. She has studied architecture and graphic design at the University of Buenos Aires. She received the first prize in the national contest organized by the National Fund for the Arts, which is part of the Cultural National Secretary of Argentina in the “Contemporary Textile Doll Making” category.

She has taught several embroidery workshops not only in Argentina but all over Spain, Paris, Berlin, London, Devon, Zürich, Ciudad de México; and also in The United States: Santa Monica (California), Boulder (Colorado) and Philadelphia (at Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters HQ). Her work has been published by Thames and Hudson in “The New Artisans”, by DPI magazine and Super Handmade, amongst others. With her embroidery artworks she is currently participating in several collective art exhibitions in Buenos Aires, Paris and Leipzig.

Join us for a day-long workshop with Adriana where students will learn how to embroider on wood when creating their own unique placid lion masks.

Fabric, needles, threads and previously pierced wooden hoops will be provided on the day.
